This first month we are focusing on education and service geared towards sustainable agriculture and reducing hunger.
Reducing Food Waste
Even though there is enough food to feed everyone in America, most of the food ends up being thrown away. Food conservation is one of the best ways to prevent food from going to the landfill. One program is to implement a waste-free lunch program to encourage students to be mindful of their waste. This is very crucial to meet the UN's Zero Hunger sustainable development goal.
Know Where Your Food Comes From
Industrialized agriculture has reduced the nutritional value of food by depleting the soil due to lack of biodiversity. Also, farms that grow with pesticides spread harmful chemicals into the environment and our own bodies. Buying food from local sustainable farms in your community is a great way to get fresher food and support food systems that can grow to sustainably support many people. Look into smart food choices here and learn how to navigate pesticides here!
Since 1900, farmers have lost 75% of crop biodiverisity. Use of Biotechnology in agriculture can increase nutrition in our diets, produce more resilient and sustainable food systems, and better the wellbeing of people in farming communities.
Join the Zero Hunger Challenge and be a part of the change we need to provide everyone the food and nutrition they need to succeed!
