Considering the chaos of the first month of school, the club was only able to accomplish the sorting out of logistical details. With all of the boring stuff out of the way, we can finally get into the agricultural theme. Having decided to extend said theme into September, we move forward with similar plans. First, we plan to volunteer at Feed my Starving Children in tandem with another club at Scottsdale prep. In addition, within my Girl Scout neighborhood I plan to orchestrate a food drive through the Give Healthy organization to benefit a local food bank. Also in my troop, we are looking into touring a local farm, some of which are Arizona’s worm farm and Superstition farms.
We are also planning to have a school-wide showing of the film “Sustainable”. I really enjoy this documentary because it doesn’t focus on the negative impacts of unsustainable agriculture but shows the people who are farming sustainably today.
Also within the club, we plan on volunteering at the Phoenix farmers market well whatever Saturdays we can. In addition to assisting at the market, I will encourage the club members to stay and engage in a scavenger hunt of sorts that requires them to talk to the venders selling their own fruits and vegetables. I will attach all of the necessary links and documents to the bottom of this post. Stay up to date by checking out the website every now and then!
